It's official. Clear Channel Radio's former smooth jazz WNUA-FM switches today to a Spanish hot adult contemporary format, and the station will be known as Mega 95.5.
The station's new call letters are yet to be announced.
The station playlist will feature artists such as Juanes, Mana, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Paulina Rubio and Alejandro Fernandez.
Clear Channel executives blamed their inability to sell advertising against the smooth jazz format in the current radio environment for the need to switch formats at WNUA. Indeed the most recent industry sales figures suggest the station was pulling in about a third of the ad revenue a month that it did as recently as a year ago.
Clear Channel believes it can do better appealing to Hispanics, who according to United States census, now represent approximately 15.2 of Illinois' total population. For the declining number of listeners who will miss smooth jazz,
Clear Channel said it will continue to offer that format on its HD radio signal at 95.5 HD2 and online at www.yoursmoothjazz.com.
